Rabbi Sentenced To 30 Years For Molesting Daughter

A Hasidic rabbi, convicted by a federal jury of molesting his daughter over a seven year period, has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.

Israel Weingarten, 59, of Monsey, who represented himself at trial, was found guilty in March of five counts of transporting his daughter in foreign commerce for the purpose of sexually abusing her during the spring and summer of 1997.

The convictions followed a week-long trial. Weingarten could have received up to 50 years’ in prison.

Weingarten’s daughter is now 27. She is one of seven Weingarten children. Her six siblings, ages 13 to 23, support their father. She testified that she had been molested by her father while living with her family in Hasidic communities in Belgium, Israel and New York.

Weingarten claimed that he had been falsely accused by a daughter who had rebelled against a strict upbringing.

The young woman had testified that she had come forward with the charges against her father at the urging of her mother who was battling Weingarten in a custody dispute. She said she had tried to forget everything that had happened to her as her father had warned her that would never be able to prove that he had molested her.

In 2003, she told the FBI that she had been molested since the age of 9.

Comments:
All six other children support the father?

And the mother is in dispute with the father and supporting the plaintiff?

Hm....

How likely is it that the father picks one girl only to molest?

Hm...

To the anonymous poster of 8:15AM who seems to be having problems believing that a molester would molest only one of his children: Believe it! There are many documented cases where one child is chosen to be molested or abused and the others are left alone. Oftentimes, when that child is grown and moves away from the molester he chooses another child to replace the first one, but that is not always the case. So stop your "hmming", it's bad enough the poor girl suffered years at the hands of her own father, she doesn't need a stranger like you making noises trying to cause doubt in anyone's head. Before you make comments go read the trial transcript.

Would the Judge have decided this on a hunch? Wouldn't he have had some proof?

Unfortunately I have been abused while living under my parents roof. I was singled out. My parents had 5 children and I was the only one to be singled out to be abused.

It is very true that sometimes one child is singled out for different types of abuse. Psycologists call this the "target child' and believe me, it happens in many cases. You also don't know for sure if none of the other children hasn't been abused. They may be too afriad to speak up and side with their "bad" sister who has left the comminity.

I am 8:15 AM.

Obviously, I was not there at the trial and have no first, or even second hand knowledge of what evidence was brought up.

It just seemed that, given the above, and given the fact that this woman had her issues with religion, rather interesting that the others not only had no abuse but also were so very certain of his nature.

it appears that the judge sentenced him because he was pro se and the judge didn't like that. as for the case, it also seems odd that the state chose not to prosecute when they had first dibs on this case. also, there is no forensic evidence of molestation, so now we put people in prison on the say of people without proof. now, i don't know what happened with these people, but i am afraid that granting government the right to imprison without proof, that the public accepts guilt upon accusations and we have a knee jerk reaction when we hear the cry of molestation - we need to slow down and rethink the entire criminal justice system. If this guy did it he needs to be in prison, but absolute proof should be required when we put people in prison. there are way too many innocent who have been convicted and put away for years.

The judge even said that he was increasing the sentencing because the defendant vigorously cross-examined the victim.

Well, duh, if one is acting as pro se, isn't that what one is supposed to do?

I'm shocked at these comments do you guys realle believe that he is a Tzadik and not guilty? I doubt it. His own family (siblings) believe he's guilty and at least 3 of his childrn believe he's guilty as one of the comments say PLEASE read the transcripts. he hurt his daughter by molesting her and continued hurting her in court. By the way what do you think came first the chicken or the egg? did his wife divorce him because of the molestation and did his daughter become not frum before she was molested? Obviously you don't know any of the facts. This is one case that justice was carried out JUSTLY

This daughter is a liar, and she will burn in hell for it. Her supporters are only Mr Weingartens enemys who are desparate to see him behind bars. She left yiddishkeit totaly, which proves that she has issues. She is getting back at her father for being too strict with her (regarding frumkeit), but what a way to do it! Why would Mr W. win custody of the children after his divorce, if he is capable of commiting such crimes? There are thousands of loopholes in her stories - loads of things which dont make sense, and where she contradicts herself.

ALL of you that support him , would you let him babysit your childeren ?
