BREAKING NEWS - Abduction of young girl in Boro-Park

Police and Shomrim apprehended a man who abducted a five-year-old girl in Boro-Park. The man, who is white and in his high fifties, took the child into his black Maxima and sped off with her. Police and Shomrim were immediately contacted and gave chase. The man became trapped when he mistakenly made a left turn into the dead-end street on 19th Avenue and 50th Street. Police at the scene approached the Maxima with their guns drawn and handcuffed the man. The girl's mother was shortly after brought to the scene in a dark tinted vehicle to be there with her daughter to make a positive identification on the perpetrator.

Out of the Inbox - Banning Frum creative outlets

Sent in by a Chaptzem reader

This is a story that I'd think more appropriate for April Fools Day.

A student from a prominent Yeshiva in Boro-Park was rewarded for breaking a pen that was signed by Lipa Schmeltzer. The principal of this school preaches to innocent young pupils about the dangers of listening to Lipa Schmeltzer. It is actually 'banned' to purchase or hear Mr. Schmeltzer's albums.

This is a true story that my 9 year old son let me in on. As a parent who isn't exactly smitten over Lipa I must admit this incident is so way out of line that it really got me thinking. What have our chinuch institutions morphed into? The answer: Fanatic & radical establishments that are clearly delivering very wrong messages to our children. To be rewarded for breaking a pen that was signed by a yid? I know there are plenty of bad yidden out there but please....this is bordering on insane.

HASID BID FOR HISTORY IN COUNCIL

A Brooklyn man who has long served as spokesman for Brooklyn's various Orthodox groups said yesterday he wants to be the first Hasidic Jew elected to the City Council.

Isaac Abraham, a 56-year-old community activist and hardware-store owner from Williamsburg, joins at least four other contenders for the Democratic nomination to succeed David Yassky, who represents the 33rd District.

The primary is scheduled for Sept. 9.

No Republican has stepped forward so far.

The diverse district also includes Park Slope, Greenpoint, DUMBO, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights and Boerum Hill.

"I'm not running as a religious person. I'm running as a qualified person," Abraham said.

"One of the issues I want to fight for is school vouchers."

Lipa Schmeltzer CD signing autograph contest

In the next few days Jewish Pop star Lipa Schmeltzer will be doing the rounds making store appearances and signing his new CD 'A Poshiter Yid'. We would like to know What is the weirdest thing you will have Lipa sign?

We want you to be creative and bring along something interesting for Lipa to autograph. Maybe a 'jezzy' neck tie, a pillow, a pair of roller blades, a 'Big Event' poster or a Kol Koreh, anything you think might be interesting. Be imaginative.

Upload your pictures to an image hosting site such as TinyPic.com and post the link here. We will post pictures of the most peculiar items autographed.

Court: KJ school district was wrong to fire teacher without hearing

The Kiryas Joel School District must reinstate a fired teacher and give him back pay with interest, a state appeals court ruled on Friday.
The Appellate Division of the state Supreme Court said that Supreme Court Justice John K. McGuirk was correct in 2007 when he ordered the school district to reinstate the teacher, Robert Pollock.
McGuirk, who hears cases in Goshen, found that the district violated Pollock’s rights under state Education Law by firing him in 2003 without bringing charges or holding a disciplinary hearing. The district appealed McGuirk’s ruling to the Appellate Division. Friday’s unanimous ruling by a four-judge panel upheld McGuirk and sent the case back to him to decide how much back pay Pollock is entitled to receive from the district.
The Kiryas Joel School District serves special education students in a village whose 20,000 residents are nearly all Satmar Hasidic Jews. Children who don’t require special education attend privately funded religious schools.

Rabbi beats speeding ticket

Quebec's Jewish chaplain for prisons got a speeding ticket quashed after convincing a judge he'd been rushing to a medical emergency: a baby boy who was bleeding from a ritual circumcision.

"It wasn't like I was going 120 kilometres an hour - I was going a reasonable speed," Jacob Lévy told Judge Alain St-Pierre in Outremont municipal court Monday, where he went to contest the ticket.

After listening to the rabbi's story, the judge said Lévy had proven the "necessity" of why he'd been speeding, and threw out the ticket.

A Young Man From Omaha, Who May Perfectly Represent Brooklyn

Moments before Yosef Abrahamson, 16, accepted an award for the essay he’d written in a competition sponsored by the Police Athletic League, an officer approached him to complain about his fedora. The hat, an essential wardrobe item for Hasidic men, was gaudy, the policeman told him, and what’s with all these kids today and their nose rings and their attitudes. A second police officer, overhearing the conversation, came over to steer away the first one, who reappeared a few minutes later to apologize. He’d never seen a Hasidic Jew, he told Yosef.

A policeman working in New York who’d never seen a Hasidic Jew? What he probably meant, Yosef theorized, was “that he’d never seen a Hasidic Jew of color. I think he was probably making some assumptions there.”

Thanks to his Egyptian father, who left the family when Yosef was young, and his maternal grandfather, who was of African descent by way of Panama, Yosef looks African-American (though his family prefers to describe themselves as Jews of color, believing their culture to be exclusively Jewish). Yosef moved to Crown Heights only a year ago, until then having lived in Omaha, where his mother’s maternal family, German Jewish merchants, had settled several generations earlier.

If Yosef, who attends the yeshiva Darchai Menachem in Crown Heights, ever finds himself writing a college application essay, his advisers would have a hard time choosing which of his compelling story lines would most dazzle those college admissions officers: The story of growing up in the only Hasidic family in Omaha? Or the story of being the only student of color in his yeshiva? Or maybe the story of being the only Hasidic person of color in Omaha’s competitive ice skating circuit?

Despite the friendships he made while ice skating, a hobby his mother encouraged to round him out, life in Omaha was “a bit lonely,” Yosef admitted last week while eating a Kosher hamburger on Albany Avenue with his mother and his older sister, Sarah, 22. His mother, Dinah, who joined the Chabad-Lubavitch movement after seeing videos of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson several years ago, home-schooled both of her children.

Yosef was obviously sheltered from too much scrutiny from the outside world, but the surprising combination of his race and his particular form of religious observance fazed no one in Omaha — for all the average person knew in Omaha, all Hasidic Jews were of African descent, his mother said. When friends from Nebraska first visited New York, they were fascinated to meet some white Hasids for the first time.

It was easier for Ms. Abrahamson to raise her children in Omaha than it would have been in Crown Heights, she said.

Individuals in need will be able to purchase the subsidized bikes online and have them delivered to their home. There will be a large selection of both boy's and girl's bikes in many sizes. The goal is to be able to sell all bikes at half their retail cost.

The amount of bikes subsidized are dependent on your donations. Please donate generously.

Donations will be accepted for two weeks from today, until June 29, 2008. Thereafter, starting June 30, 2008, the subsidized bikes will be available for purchase to needy families.

Frum Monsey man charged for practicing Gynecology without license

A Rockland County businessman was busted for posing as a Park Avenue gynecologist, authorities said yesterday.

A source told The Post further charges were expected against Zalman Silber, 40, for alleged sex crimes involving two female patients.

Silber was charged with two counts of unauthorized practice of a profession for posing as a gynecologist at adjacent offices on Park Avenue in 2004, law-enforcement sources said.

Silber, of Monsey, allegedly treated two women, ages 18 and 24.

In reality, Silber runs a tourist attraction in the Empire State Building that simulates a flight through New York, records show.

Silber's lawyer, Deborah Lowenberg, said her client "maintains his innocence" and that two other women failed to pick him out of a lineup.

Former Rockland District Attorney Kenneth Gribetz, who resigned under a cloud in 1995 after pleading guilty to using county money for personal matters, is also representing Silber.

Demand for kosher cuisine swells ranks of Jewish prison chaplains in U.S.

Mendel Slavin went to work as a chaplain in a San Diego prison in 2006. A Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic rabbi from the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, he was one of about a dozen Jewish chaplains serving California's fractional Jewish inmate population at the time. But in the two years since then, that number has doubled. Today Slavin is one of two dozen full-time chaplains employed by the state of California to provide counseling and lead religious services for Jews - and interested non-Jews - who are doing time.

Why the sudden surge in the numbers of Jewish chaplains in the Golden State? Three words: kosher food supervision.

In 2003, the state of California settled a lawsuit with Victor Wayne Cooper, an Orthodox Jew serving a 60-year sentence for child molestation. Cooper had sued the state for not providing him with kosher meals. As part of the settlement, the state agreed to make good-faith efforts to have kosher food available to inmates in all of its 33 prisons by 2006.

As a direct result of the lawsuit, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has been scrambling in recent years, in conjunction with the Northern and Southern California boards of rabbis, to install a Jewish chaplain at every prison in order to oversee the preparation of kosher food.

A similar case in Texas is still pending. But that state's answer to a lawsuit brought in 2005 on behalf of Max Moussazadeh, a Jew of Iranian descent, has been to consolidate all 23 of its kosher-observant inmates into one prison, bypassing the need for Jewish chaplains across the board.
The work extends far beyond merely vetting jailhouse kosher cuisine. According to one longtime Jewish chaplain, his niche is as close as a rabbi can come to performing missionary work.

"We work with the underbelly of society, the spiritually void, the morally empty," said Rabbi Lon Moskowitz, the Jewish chaplain at California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo. "It's important to have chaplains so we can facilitate the Jewish Kosher Diet Plan statewide, but it's a requirement so that the spiritual needs of incarcerated Jews are met."

Greenpoint's Hasidic Jews Take the Field

On sunny summer weekends, dozens of folks gather in Brooklyn's McCarren Park to play a little ball. They're part of the Greenpoint Neighborhood Softball League. Some have been coming since 1971, dressed in sweatpants and jerseys representing their team. But in recent years, some players have been showing up in formal black loafers, dress pants and white button-down shirts. They're called the Stormers, a team of young, mostly Hasidic Jews. Pauline Bartolone went to one of their games and filed this report.

Barack Hussein Obama meets with Satmar

Barack Obama had some face time with top ultra-Orthodox Jewish community members during his fund-raising swing through Midtown, which came on the heels of Hillary Rodham Clinton's decision to leave the race.

Obama chatted with three members of the Satmar sect, including representatives from rival factions, as they attended a campaign fund-raiser at a private home on Park Avenue.

"We just went [to the fund-raiser] to meet him and get introduced," said Rabbi Abe Friedman, an NYPD community liaison and adviser to state Sen. Eric Adams, one of Obama's early supporters.

Calling it a positive chat, Friedman said the religious leaders told Obama that they "hope he's going to support the interests of the Jewish community."

The meeting came as Obama's campaign backtracked on bombshell remarks he made Wednesday that Jerusalem should remain the "undivided" capital of Israel, according to the Jerusalem Post.

An aide later softened Obama's comments - which sparked anger in the Palestinian community - saying the sides will have to negotiate "an agreement that they both can live with."

The adviser explained that by an undivided Jerusalem, Obama did not mean that it wouldn't also serve as the Palestinian capital as well. The Jewish community balked at the news.

"The Orthodox Union is extremely disappointed in this revision of Senator Obama's important statement about Jerusalem," Nathan Diament, of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, told the paper.

Obama is considered vulnerable among Jewish voters, who traditionally lean Democratic but view Israel as a litmus test.

Out of the Inbox - Schmoozing with the ladies in the office

Sent in by a Chaptzem reader

Hi! I don't know where to start. What I am writing about has been bothering me so much that I can't even think where to begin. I am a young married lady from a very chasidishe background. I was raised completely separate from boys and men all my life. I never even had anything with my uncles or boy cousins once we reached the age of eight or nine.

I graduated high school and went to work in an office with a bunch of chasidishe girls just like me. It was a great work atmosphere, both in ruchnies and in gashmies. Because besides for the owner and a computer guy, who always kept their distance and acted appropriately, the whole place was run by ladies and I felt very comfortable because of this and enjoyed going to work every day.

A little while ago, right before I got married, the owner sold his business to another guy. In the beginning he came in and was being oriented to the business. He was very friendly to everyone and always wanted to help. After he completely took over he started calling all the girls by their first names and would schmooze with them all the time, even though they didn't want to talk to him. He would offer to bring them coffee or water all the time even after repeatedly being refused. He would also ask the girls about their life and what kind of things they liked to do, this made everyone feel extremely uncomfortable. I thought he would stop this at least with me once I got married but it hasn't changed.

We are a large bunch of girls and have tried talking to him about his behavior as best we can without getting him angry, because he can fire us and easily replace us all in a minute. But either he is not getting it or he is enjoying himself and is ignoring us completely.

The situation is getting worse by the day as he keeps on getting more comfortable and is trying to get closer to everyone. The atmosphere has gotten so bad that everyone just walks around making fun of him and hating him all the time. I wish we could go back to the way the place was before he came. I wish I could feel comfortable at work again and not hate my job. Is there anyone that can help us with this situation and give us an idea how to change things for the better?

A frustrated soul.

Shooting in crown Heights

Sent in by a Chaptzem reader

At about 10:00pm, there was a shooting on empire and Brooklyn in the heart of the Crown Heights Jewish community. Before the shooting there was a fight between two groups of African Americans and then seven shots were fired. One black male is in critical condition. Police are still searching the area for clues.

The shooting took place in the doorway of a building where many Jews live. Jewish Witnesses say they saw the shooters run up Brooklyn towards eastern parkway. its important to note , that this is the first major crime since Kelly's visit to Crown Heights.

Two police officers were standing half a block from the shooting but waited for back up before approaching the crime scene. The Summer is here and this is only the beginning.

CHAPTZEM EXCLUSIVE - Interview with source close to accused child molester Yona Weinberg

Chaptzem has procured an exclusive interview with a source close to accused child molester Yona Weinberg. Yona is the twenty-nine year old Bar-Mitzvah tutor who was first accused of molesting two brothers and then later by two more kids who came forward.

According to the source, Yona does not plan to enter a plea bargain to the charges he is facing and will fight it to the end. The source further says that Yona has enlisted the help of a high powered attorney who specializes in defending accused child molesters. The case is expected to go to trial as the childrens' testimony is being seen as credible by the prosecutors. The source also relayed that once this matter is resolved, whether he is proven innocent or guilty, Yona plans to leave his profession as a Social Worker and may pursue a career in computers.

Dov Hikind considers run for Brooklyn Borough President

According to a source, New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind is considering a run for the office of Brooklyn Borough President. The seat, currently occupied by Marty Markowitz, may soon be available when Marty runs for Mayor, leaving it open for Dov for the taking. According to the source, Dov is tired of trekking to Albany and wants to come home already. Being that Dov never actually followed his previous plan to run for a Citywide office, this may well be his current best option.
