Out of the Inbox - Totty voos iz doos?

Sent in by a Chaptzem reader

I am a chassidisher yingerman in my thirties who grew up in Williamsburg. I am now burech hashem married with four children living in boro park with my oldest child being a seven year old boy. My son always has a lot of questions for me which I try to answer. Sometimes I know the answer and sometimes I don't. Even when I don't have the answer myself I won't just push him off and say I don't know, I will usually tell him how to find the answer and help him with it.

But lately my son has been asking me a question that I don't know how to answer or how to talk to him about it. Since before the summer he has been asking me why he sees yeeden with payis riding a motorcycle. He asks me if it isn't true that only goyim go flying around on motorcycles.

His question made me start to think. Why do we need this in our neighborhood? Chassidishe people that look just like everybody else on the outside, but are completely fardorben on the inside that just go around making these problems and confuse the little innocent children. I don't understand why the rabunim don't talk about this in shiel and asser motorcycles or at least leaving them on the street where kids can see them. There should not be allowed to have any yiddishe motorcycles parked on the street in boro park. I feel like this is having a very big effect on my son's erliche haskofeh which I work so hard to put into him. This should have to stop now.

A very concerned father

Comments:
First off I must say this post is ridiculous. to the writer...
you need to get a life. with the price of gas these days, motorcycles are an economical alternative to cars. a yid ridding a motorcycle is no different the a yid ridding a car or a city bus. you need to get out of the box and see what the cost difference in insuring, fueling, and parking a car compared to a motorcycle and you will see how smart the yid is for driving that motorcycle. That way he can afford his kids tuition and give tzedakah to the more needy.

And What's wrong with a motorcycle? Should we assur children riding bicycles or tricycles because goyim ride them too? AT 125miles tothe gallon, motorcycles provide very inexpensive transportation for 1 or 2 individuals. That the rove dosen't ride them, doesn't make them assur.

I'm sure you have much better things to worry about than a few yichidim trying to save acouple of bucks. Just tell you son that not everyone can afford a Lexus or SUV and nebech, some yiden can only afford to use 4 gallons of gas a week to go back and forth to the grocery store.

Why don't we just assur EVERYTHING then there won't be anything to complain about- or anyone to do the complaining.

Remeber - chumrah's lead to avairos

You need help, my friend.

Excuse me for saying so, but I beleive that you are a bit naive. In Israel you will see lots of frum heimish yiddin riding scooters and motor cycles in Bnei Brak and Yerushaliyim. They are very fuel efficient. With gas prices this high, people need to find cost saving ways of transportation. Riding a scooter or motor cycle doesnt make someone "fardurben" automatically.

My goodness, just tell him theres nuthin wrong with it. And btw, Hatzolah in Israel drive motorcycles so its not a goyisha thing.

Riding a bike is fardorben but trolling the tumana internet is ok?

Yes you can't hide children know everything. People like you make me sick! Why don't you move to a farm? maybe growing up with animals will have a great impact on your children.

Are you serious?Whats wrong with a motorcycle?because you cant explain to your child that there is nothing wrong, but you dont like it,the rabbis should asur it?before you talk to a rabbi talk to a shrink pal.

Maybe you can explain to your son that not all frum Jews are exactly the same. That would be a truly erlicha hashkafa to give your son.

In abstract the writer is wrong. A motercycle, a bike and a car they are all the same thing, a travel device. However I think we know what he is talking about, these are people that use it not as a means to travel, but rather as a sport and we all know that the motercycle as a sport is considerd something that even a classy businessman goy would not do.

Can you imagine the president, mayor, Governer driving a motercycle? Can you imagine the mashgiach or rosh hayeshiva in lakewood driving a motercycle? We are bnei malochim, no different then all those mentioned above. Of course there may not be an issur, however it's not in the Jewish spirit or rather in the Heimishe spirit to do so.

I do however have some advice for this fella. There is something we call the Melting Pot Theory, that means that when you live in a place enough long enough you will adapt to their culture. The fact is that there are heimshe Yankee fans, Heimishe rap singer, heimishe everything even heimishe Hollywood actors, yes from Williamsburg. You need to explain to your children that not everything some who dresses like you do means that they are like you. YOU CANNOT FIGHT THE WORLD. You need to lean and teach your children to tolerate and respect but stay strong to their values. Look at Poland brfore the war, they sufferd terribly from the melting pot theory, but this is life. Stay strong and dont give up Mashiach is around the corner and he rides a dunkey.

A Ksiva V'chasima Tova.

Why don't you tell him that payos doesn't mean anything, just because someone where payos and a regel, it doesn't say anything about their frumkeit, maybe it did 30 years ago, now its zero, and he should judge people by their looks, for good or for bad.

First of all i think you should go to peratning classes there you will learn to answer your son proper answers
I totaly dont undestand whats goish in motercycles
I was once in Europe (Belgium) ther Alot of Chasidise Yidden with Shtreimlech and white sockes drive motorcycles scottoors

I think I saw Lipa on a motorcycle on 13th avenue last week listening to a freshly banned CD.
Folks, this chasidishe complainer about motorcycles is pulling your collective chains.
Its a nice sarcastic comment on the chumra stupidity now the rage in the chareidi and chasidishe community.

Tell your son that for some, the chassidishe garb is just a costume.

Tell your son that this is the outcome of machlokes, The bochurim that are riding motorcycles are chasiidim of R' M D Unger, their fathers are still in bobov, they were brainwashed that their parents don't know. So now their parents have no influence on them

tell your son that many chassid in eretz yisroel drive motorcycles.
you can also explain to him that there's nothing inherently goyish about riding a motorcycle- except that it's very dangerous to do so & most yidden are more safety conscious

What a ridiculous post. Why is a sedan more "Yiddish" than a motorcycle??? Satmar rebbe zt"l used to be driven in a convertible, anyone have a problem with that as well? London, Antwerp & in Eretz Yisroel many frum people right on mopeds and the like. Its economical and easier to park. I prefer a sedan but have no problem with any mode of transportation that might suit others. Plain pushit tipshus.

However I think we know what he is talking about, these are people that use it not as a means to travel, but rather as a sport and we all know that the motercycle as a sport is considerd something that even a classy businessman goy would not do.

In all seriousness, however, let's put this into perspective.

Yes, there is a "biker culture" out there. But not everyone who has a motorcycle is a "biker," anymore than everyone who has a fancy sports car is a "hot-rodder." Malcolm Forbes rode a motorcycle later in life, but he wasn't a "biker."

You can explain to your son that there are some people who take motorcycling to an unhealthy extreme, as some people do with cars, guns or just about anything else.

The Wolf

This guy is a real piece of work. Technically, you can say anything is chikas hagoyim. But why don't you start by telling him there are good yidden and there are bad yidden regardless of how they look or don't look. You can also tell the little boy that there are other people in world that are not like him. Just the fact that we are living in gulis in a goyishe country leads to a lot of contradictions. The bottom line is, if you bring up the child with ahava and menchlichkeit, usually everything else falls in place.

The true hashkofa as many have mentioned is that not all jews are the same some wear small kipas some big kapulch some wear hats others caps some wear peyes down other on their ears and others....This is not Wiliamsburg where if you don't wear a shteimel shabbos you are not a yid! Teach him to respect everyone for what they are! WE ARE ALL BROTHERS! BTW if you were ever in Europe mainly Belgium you will see some of the riches yidden in the diamond district arriving to work with bikes/motorcycles! There is no parking available there and they have narrow roads - same here no parking narrow lanes. As to Yankee games that is already something to wonder about. The enviroment at a game is a low one with cursing and inappropriate behavior which makes it the un-ideal place for a heimishe yungerman to be, as to putting a Yankee sticker on your car or license plate - plain silly!

I guess you've never been on the other side of the Verezzano Bridge, or east of the Belt Parkway. In Antwerp, alles chassidim ride "motorcycles" aka scooters with payos flying in the wind.

Rent the Mad Adventures of Rabbi Yaacob (Peter Sellers) and watch it with your son on the 27" video monitor you had delivered in an air conditioner box and keep in the closed section of your seforim shrahnk.

It's pretty simple. If he's using the motorcycle to escape the police after having robbed a bank, that would be considered a bad thing. If he's using the motorcycle to get to minyan on time, that would be considered a good thing. Now, do us all a favor and crawl back under the rock. See ya next century Einstein!

tell him that he doesnt have a chance at being normal being that ur his father

Are you for real? I am a father of 3, B"H, and we are chassidim of the Lubavitcher Rebbe who taught us that everything in this world is klipas nogah. We have an option to use it to serve G-D, or G-D forbid, the opposite.

Personally, if a Chassidhe yungerman with payos can't afford the gas hikes and the like but still needs to get to work to earn a parnassah, why is that a problem for any of us?

So try this next time "Son, there is nothing wrong with using a motorcycle at all. True, it may be a bit dangerous, however if a person is well trained in riding one, and he needs it to get from point a to point b, then it's something we can use to carry out our daily routine, and of course, it helps us serve Hashem easier. We can park even easier when we go to shul"

But what I don't quite understand is whether or not this guy was looking for the right answer or he doesn't care either way and just wants to be an in-the-box guy his whole life.

The baal shem tov said anything we see is a lesson for us.

From this article, what's the lesson to be learned? People are still naive. I guess in olden russia, our ancestors didn't ride mopeds.

Totty, oy vay, why is his horse black, i thought only brown horses were permitted

Next time he asks "vos iz doos?" tell him "ah lange nooz"

I personally do not ride a scooter or motorcycle becaue to do so is to fill out a death certificate with the date left blank.
Other than safety concerns I am not aware of any halachic problem.

This same mentality in Williamsburg caused a relative of mine to be called a goyte. She drove someone to the area for a Melave Malke. While she stayed in the car some little boys were playing ball. When the ball fell near the car one boy warned not to go near the car with the goyte driving. Another boy said he heard her speaking yidish but he was laughed at; they said even goyim speak Yidish. The ball stayed till the car was driven away.

Did you know know that motorcycles are the safest vehical...? You can only crash once because after that your never going to be able to drive a motorcycle ever again.

Aside from that I have to agree with every person who left a comment, this guys a jerk.

Yes I saw them on 13 ave this week its a group of Chasidic dudes maybe 5 or 6 driving on 13 this Sunday they where like a prusta gang of bikers making loud noise and revving there bikes at the red lights. They are not doing it to save money on gas they probably all have yukons, caddys, or hummers at home this was a pure joy thing
its out of hand every one is busy who is the real rabbi or banning this or that music, dress codes, wedding budgets, and all along the real problems are ignored like SEXUAL RAPE IN SCHOOLS TO MEN CHETING ON THERE WIVES IN THE CLUBS OR KIDS GOING IN BAD PLACES ON THE NET so get a life and leave them alone they just want to let of some steam that there is today. With the difficulties to raise a family and send kids to school and pay for rent and bills and food today’s young couples have it the hardest

While I do agree that it's a bit of an asinine question, you guys all need to stop playing your dumna$$ naive cards. Yes, in Europe and in Israel there are people that ride motorcycles, but...um... newsflash, did you NOT read his post? He doesn't LIVE in freaking Europe. He lives here in the US where we all know that motorcycles aren't accepted like they are in Europe. When in Rome......

So yes, as much as the motorcycle itself does not make or break the person, I think it's a safe assumption that any frum guy living in BP that rides a bike, may be less ehrlich than this guy. So cut the cr@p and stop making believe you don't know what he's talking about.

I've never seen so much am haratzus. Every cheder kid knows that a motorcycle is assur. Harley motorcycles is sometimes referred to as a "hog" and a hog is assur min hatorah. Other brands are assur because of maris ayin as someone seeing you ride a Honda Motorcycle may mistakenly think that you are riding a hog.

people complain bout young boys just having some innocent fun riding motorcycles... and yet no one complians that the machlokes beween rebbishe families is teaching our children that fighting is okay!?!?! is that normal for the frum community? ive lost all respect for the sects that split... its absolutely counter-religious...

Firstly, I don't believe you're a chasidisher yingerman.

Secondly, I don't believe you grew up in Williamsburg.

Third of all, you most certainly did not yet grow up, as you claim.

If in fact you are married, you've given me another reason to say 'shelo usani isho', as I may have married someone like you.

Lastly, I find it difficult to believe that your son's question made you 'start to think'. After so many years, it's gonna take more that that!

Are you that stupid not to know that they are all undercover cops?
(With the exception of one whose name is Nuchem Rosenberg. but we all know that he's fardorben!)

Are you that stupid not to know that they are all undercover cops?

who? the bikers?

A SHANDA on a HONDA?

how about the heimisher in the rekel lead away in handcuffs? doesnt that upset you?

yo ppl!! im one of the bike riders.. and ya i love my nike.. and i have nice peyos i daven 3 times a day .. are u any diff then me?? we both grew up chassidish.. GET A LIFE!!!

"Can you imagine the president, mayor, Governer driving a motercycle?"

Whos says they don't governors certainly do even the biggest governor in the USA Arnold Schwarzenegger rides 1. If I remeber correctly he had a crash on a motorcycle 2 years ago.

Anyhow this Williamsburg guy needs a doctor urgently. Even from his side he CAN'T be mechanech his children.....

Actually, only BLACK horses were permitted. Brown ones were osser!

It's easier to park a motorcycle, and it costs far less than a car to run, so why not drive one? Is it a matter of Tznius? So okay, women shouldn't be scooting around on them.I know certain Chassidim don't allow bicycle riding either. Is it for the same reason?

to anon 7:37 PM: Eating Hog is treif, but, who says you're not allowed to ride one?

@Anon 2:19: "Les Aventures de Rabbi Jacob" did not star Peter Sellers, it was Louis de Funès.

Absolutely hilarious film, it's one of the few movies that leave you with a stomach-ache from laughing too much. (Which I'd say violates "oz yimoleh s'chok pinu".) Rated G, too, which is rare nowadays for a mainstream film.

(And if you really are recommending the film and not simply being facetious, I have to point out that the DVD available at Amazon.com is actually a copy of an old VHS tape, with "hard" (i.e. non-selectable) subtitles. Caveat emptor.)

Regarding motorcycles, I'm not likely to ever ride one myself, but see nothing halachically wrong with it per se, so long as you learn how to do it correctly, and wear the appropriate safety equipment. Of course a Harley with ape hangers, open pipes, extended forks and a half ton of chrome might not be the best choice for a frum yeed...

This is the stupidist thing I've ever read. Banning motercycles now? Some of the greatest FRUM, OBSERVANT people I know, who are more religious than all those people who dress the right way, and act the wrong way, use motorcycles. Let me guess, next you are going to ban women from riding in cars? Going to school? Not teaching young children how to write their name is CHAS V'SHALOM English??? Grow up.

Perhaps the people here should google the word "troll."

Shame on you, tell him the truth that what have told him for years that only goim ride motorbikes, you lied to him. Now apologise to him and start being truthfull to yourself, your son and stop telling them lies about yidishkiet or anything else for that matter.

Yidishkiet is the word of the torah not your screwed up version were you make all thease chimras and teach them to your children as Halacha.

You should not be worried about people on their motorbikes.

You should be worried that your son believes that you can tell the frumkeit of a person according to the clothes he/she wears. This could be (seriously) very dangerous for your child, sinc it could lead him to trust the wrong people.

so the answer you should give him is very easy: "You cannot see from the outside who is frum and who isn't."

To sum it up this father does not know how to raise his kids with proper Chinuch...just another product of the broken system
