Ramapo gives new formerly Hasidic Jewish female cop the Sabbath off

A newly hired town police officer has been given Friday nights to Saturday evenings off to accommodate her religious beliefs.

The special work schedule afforded Officer Baile J. Glauber has raised concerns among other officers, said Officer Dennis Procter, the department's Police Benevolent Association president.

"I hope the town is not going to give special treatment to one individual for religious observances and not give other officers the same opportunities," Procter said. "We all can't always make temple or church or spend weekends with our families."

Glauber, an ultra-Orthodox Jew who married under the Hasidic beliefs, graduated last month from the Rockland Police Academy. She completed the six months of physical training and educational classes to become a police officer.

She asked for the Sabbath off.

A memo dated June 27 to Glauber from Police Chief Peter Brower states, "I have been advised by the Town Attorney, Mike Klein, to modify your current work schedule in order to permit you to maintain the Sabbath Observances."

Brower assigned Glauber to work Sunday to Thursday on the 4 p.m. to midnight shift, which began June 29. She is still a probationary officer and undergoing field training with a more experienced officer.

Glauber, who is divorced and has a child, was nominated for hiring in February by the Town Board. She had worked for the Sheriff's Department Traffic Safety Board before becoming a Ramapo police officer.

She graduated in June 2007 from Rockland Community College.

Glauber could not be reached for comment. She had declined to discuss her background and the police academy training after the June graduation ceremony.

KOL HAKAVOD to her!!! I salute her for this!!

I think this lady is out of her mind. shabbos geit ir un?? whats with all other issuray torah? tznius? maybe she didnt get enough attention. i think she should be ibergeleigt!!

To the anon @ 854 you chardim arent the only ones that keep shabbos and mitzvahs. she probably a much better person then you.

Good for her!

To 8:54 anon:

What "issuray torah"? Oh you mean made up chasidishe issurim! She might touch a perpetrator? Most legitimate poskim would hold that since it's not b'derech chiba there's no issur (i.e., a doctor or nurse)

Oh wait...I forgot something - the pants! Ah goy!

Gay cocken oifen yam!

good for her - her parents abandoned her for not being 'exactly the same' as they wanted her to be - she made a life for herself - and proved to this crazy chasidishe community that there IS life after chasidish hypocrisy. she gets my full endorsement :)

Anon 11:34 If she gets you "full endorsement" why not write your name why are are you hiding your endorsement?

Interesting how 4 of the 5 posters are applauding her, while she herself looks quite miserable in the picture. I doubt SHE is happy with her new career, it was just to get back at her family and community.

still has the looks of an eidele yiddishe meidele

Probably she just wants a day off of work... Not a bad idea...

Good for her!!! There is life outside of chassidus!!
For all you narrow minded chassidim...just because she doesn't dress like you ...doesn't mean that she should be mechalel shabbos!! Are you Hashems accountant...to now who is better??? she might be better than many supposedly "frum" people who live hypocritical lives... constantyly speaking lashon hara about those that don't fit into chassidus...always passing judgemnet on others...first fix yourselves- its not your responsibility to fix others.

Her whole family is screwed up including the grand parents . Kol hakavod that she was able to creep out of that hell hole and made something of herself unlike her friends from bys ruchel. What a sick place that is. Just wait and see how many more wil come out of the woodwork because of the torture that goes on in thisw ghetto.

she can only arrest women just like Yoeli can only arrest men!

looks like she knows how to handle men pretty well

what a shame...

I'm a Jew, but not a Chassid and not from Brooklyn. On Chaptzem there are always this negative and defeatist comments about how bad the chassidishe community is, how so many people get off the derech, how bad chassidus is etc. Whats wrong?? I thought Chassidism is a good thing, and now I read this...?

KOl Hakavod! She has the right to practice the profession of her choice.

Most of these commenters applauding her unorthodox behavior are probably the same people bemoaning children going off the derech. With such an attitude, they still wonder why?

To Anon 6:19:
Let me explain. Chassidism is a good thing, a beautiful thing and 95% of Chassidim are happy and feel that way 100% of the time. Unfortunately, there are those who aren't happy in the "fold" and instead of just doing their thing, and thinking like individuals, they enjoy being stuck there and ranting about it. I gave up reading comments on this site a while ago, or if I read them I don't take them seriously. They are written by the same, few, anon's who live like I wrote above. In many blogs elsewhere they are many happy Chassidim celebrating Life and Chassidus.

Anonymous July 8, 5:01 PM.

From the way that you sound, intolerant as you are, you will probably join her.

good going!!! i am very happy for her, i am sure she is suffering a lot on the inside living with the choices she made! let her be and accept her, at least she is orthodox and not leading a double life!

She maybe dresses like a sheigetz with pants and a necktie but shes a shikse

G-d bless her, it's people like many of you posters who make people go away from the religion and Hashem should watch her and guide her not only from the criminals in her district (many of them 'tzaddikim' who put on the outfit and fool many of you hypocrites) but from the criminals like you who are full of sinas chinam and make women into dirt. This is not an issue of charedi or chassidish (and there are many chassidish people who are erlich and decent), you people would have made great Christians during the Inquisition as well!

hey and all you so cALLED tzaddikim - WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON THE INTERNET?!? hahahahaha

Why is she looking down? Bisha, maybe? I wonder...

the pintele yid is never extinguished! I applaud officer Glauber for her courage to ask for shabbos off. To all posters who had critic, why dont you ever see the good of things?? dont you see here a yiddishe neshama clinging to the shabbos???

I applaud officer Glauber for her courage to ask for shabbos off............
KEEP IT UP............

Ich zug shoin gurnisht : in other words NO COMMENT

"KOL HAVOD TO HER
"?!?! YOU ALL, KNOWING NOTHING OF HER BACKGROUND SUDDENENLY KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR HER! WHAT YOU MEAN TO SAY IS "GOOD SHE ISN'T MAKPID ON SHULCHAN ARUCH AS I AM, AND SHE'S MORE LIKE ME NOW, YUP I'D SAY THAT'S WORTH A KOL HAKOVOD! YUP DON'T YOU JUST WISH ALL CHASSIDIM WOULD JUST DISAPPEAR, YOU HATE MONGERERS.

The local NYC paper reported
today that there may be a
problem with the special
treatment given this police
officer. They argue that no
one is allowed to have certain
days of weekly for religious
reasons.
Also, the other officers are
not in agreement with the
agreement given to her.
This may end in a court case.

Hashem loves all his children. Ms. Glauber can use her talents to make a Kiddush Hashem in many ways.
