Councilman Simcha Felder proposing law that abolishes a Minhag Yisrael

Our favorite New York City Councilman Simcha Felder has been quite busy lately. Between swiping filing cabinets from City Hall, replacing street garbage cans and giving himself a pay raise it makes one wonder how he finds the time. However, Simcha's latest piece of proposed legislature may be putting him into a halachic quandary. Simcha has been very busy lately doing the press circuit about placing a $1,000 fine on people that feed the pigeons. Now, while this possible new law and newly conceived office of 'Pigeon Czar' may be the best new law of the millennium, it may however come into conflict with a long established Minhag that Yidden the world over have been practicing for thousands of years. You see, as every Yiddishe kindergarden child knows, as a thanks to the birds for eating the Mun that Dussan and Aviram placed in the open on Shabbos to embarrass Moshe Rabbeinu, we put out crumbs for the birds to eat every year for Shabbos Parshas Beshalach. Councilman Felder however wants to put an end to this Minhag and make it illegal to feed the birds. We will cannot allow this to happen. We cannot tolerate this outright violation of 'Minhag Yisrael Toirah'.

Let's all band together and let Simcha know that what he is doing is neged the Toirah and we will not tolerate it.

Call, e-mail, fax and write Councilman Simcha Felder and let him that you are outraged at his flagrant disregard for the Torah and Mitzvahs

R u serious?? This is the most important issue u can up with? Feeding the pigeons? What is it, a slow news day for u? I happen to think that simcha may be right about this. I would'nt mind feeding more desirable birds like sparrows but pigeons are disgusting. They leave a mess everywhere. And their droppings are very acidic and eventually destroys even metal. They even kill the lame birds among them. And as one of the victims of their "dive bombings", on my me and my car, its not very pleasant to clean the mess they leave behind. Why do you think they are called the "rats" of the sky?

THE LAW WOULD BE ONLY ON PUBLIC PROPERTY YOU CAN FEED THE BIRDS ON YOUR PORCH OR IN YOUR YARD. I HOPE A PIGEON SENDS YOU ONE OF HIS PACKAGES RIGHT ON TOP OF YOUR HEAD.

I'm sure the law can include a "religious exemption." Perhaps specifically mention the law is suspended over Shabbos Parshas Beshalach.

Otherwise, the Bill of Rights must surely protect every Yid's right to practice his minhagim!

Chaptzem you are a little late.

Read Der Blatt this week and you will see an answer to your problem on pg4.

By the way I read the legislation that Felder wants to implement and there is no problem with feeding the birds IN YOUR PROPERTY.

This is Hungarian chassidus at its best. We'll never change anything, even the birds we feed! Afilu arksa dmisannah is yehareig v'al ya'avor.

you are not the first person or blog to point this out. after the law passes, you can surely expect alot of 1,000 fines in felder's midwood district on shabbos shira. (or expect a "special religious dispensation" to be crafted to avoid that from happening)

In a mukom sakuna you can override a minhag, now go ask him mechila bec. you were mevaza a yid berabim.

gam ani mitztaref

Thanks, Chaptzem...I missed that se'if in Taamei Haminhogim.

by the way simcha felder has "smichah".

Chaptzem,

You are trying to create a story that doesn't even exsits.

Feed every bird you want any day of the year in your property and you won't get a fine.

This is law is to ban feeding in public places/property.

Simcha

Is this not so important to you
I have notice on 18th ave alone there are two school what they deserve traffic lights (51 & 54) what are we waiting for another accident r"l !!!!!

Yes I did call 311 plenty times about it and said they will look into it

I tried getting a traffic light on my corner and we didn't get it. To my understanding it’s because of the federal government. They don’t give permission for NYC DOT to install traffic lights at every corner. There are a lot of studies done before a traffic light gets approved. I don’t think Simcha or any Councilman has to much say in regards to a traffic light.

This is so funny! I can see from your tone that you're not really upset about the pigeons, but you see a great opportunity to have Reb Simcha flooded with angry letters and emails, LOL. Good one. :oD

Its also a *mihag yisroel* not to be MEVAZEH PEOPLE BERABIM!

I resnt the new law.
What will i do with my leftover challah
Maybe I can get an alternate side feeding suspension when parshas beshalach falls in an election year.

Are you out of your *&^*^ mind.
Get a life, you can still drop your breadcrumbs in the ocean for tashlich.

Suppose everyone stopped feeding the pigeons, would they disappear? There is enough garbage and dropped crumbs in the city to feed plenty of them. I guess it might lessen the problem.

"the great one"
Sounds like Weprin is on board here and early election fever is starting.

Reb Simcha,

Vos vilsteh fin de feig'ilach?

Man Bubbeh fleigt gebben essen tsu zei, in villimasbug-

A dank,

Macht nisht a shi'luach hak'aan.

Dus iz nisht an "elefant" vos fleet, dus iz a feigeleh.

Yudel Shain
