Racists among us

On Shabbat I overheard a children’s conversation that I wished I had not. I passed by a Hasidic synagogue, whose name I won’t mention to avoid embarrassing it, when I overheard an honest conversation between two boys. They sat on the steps at the entrance to the building when the younger one, a cute boy with curly sidelocks and an innocent expression, turned to the older boy and asked him a question that threw me off balance: “Tell me, what are Yemenites?” The second boy, without thinking for even a second, answered: “Yemenites are worse than Sephardim, because they are browner”. This conversation transported me back 18 years – a scared girl in the famous Hassidic Beit Yaakov school. I was the only “suntanned” girl in grade 3b, and I was a leper.

I remember hiding in the classroom during recess so that the sun won't darken my skin. My only “outcast” friend was Tzipi. She was born with the “right genes” and did not have “mixed blood” like me, yet even Poles can sometimes be born with dark skin. Her beautiful green eyes and flowing hair did not help her pass the strict acceptance test put forth by the china dolls, our class mates. A girl who in secular society would have been placed on a highway billboard sat hunched next to me, apologizing for her existence- yes, the only two “brown” girls in the class.

Besides the feeling that we would never be as beautiful as the pure white skinned girls who populated our school, we were also considered dumb, because stupidity and darkness go hand in hand, in a distorted logic that I never understood.

someone has to explain these things to kids

I thank hashem 100 times over that i went to a lubavitcher school! In our school, you are not discriminated against because you are sphardi!!?? i happen to be yemenite too, mixed with ashkenazi, and i never felt weird or like an outcast, we have all different sorts of girls in my school, from ashkenazi's, russians, italians, and yes, even african american looking girls. in fact, one of the most popular girls in my class is FULLY yemenite! I think it is absolutely repulsive to see how these closeminded laynga peyos people act and think. they should stop trying to dress tznius and start working on their middos!!!

i am a satmer that lives in lakewood there is no such thing as any difference between sefardi yemenite wheather in yesiva or work or any other way the only thing we do try to stay away fron are non jews and lubavitch which are not that far from each other

y should they stop trying to dress tznius- that is halacha too
they should keep dressing tznius but should also work on their midos
(no need to rectify one wrong by starting another wrong trend)

That girl who went to Lubavitch school commenting above is a good example of ''a racist amongst us.'' She refers to hasidim as ''these closeminded laynga peyos people'' and admonishes them to ''stop trying to dress tzinius.''

Ahhh... more true Lubavtich ahavas yisroel... make that ahavas thsoe who -- already or potentially -- belong to them or give them money.

As for the article, journalists know that senstaionalism and negativity sell papers.

Since when is ynet known for telling the truth anyways? They'll publish any lie that fits their agenda, the facts be damned.

message to satmar. You may be satmar but you are sure not a chassid. A true chassid loves all Jews.

lubav - Since you claim to be half Yemenite, for the record, Yemenite's like the Chasidim wear "laynga peyos" as you derogatorily refer to Chasidim.

Be proud of your heritage. Do not disaprge others.

It seems to me that this blog is always about Lubavitch bashing or Lubavitch bashing the rest of us. It's pointless. We are all Jewish regardless of the color of our skin, whether or not we follow a Rebbe, dead or alive and we should try to be more achdusdik instead of looking down at someone who thinks differently than we do. I am NOT Lubavitch, and I KNOW the Rebbe is dead and is NOT Moshiach, but, I don't look down on Lubavitchers.

THAT COMMENT ABOVE MADE AT 10:54 AM WAS MADE ON SHABBOS KODESH (ALSO NOTE THE COMMENTERS ''GUT SHABBOSS.'')

I ALWAYS KNEW THESE SELF-HATING JEWS WHO HATE THE RELIGIOUS AND CHASIDIM, EVEN IF THEY WERE RELIGIOUS OR CHASIDIC AT ONE TIME, ARE A BUNCH OF MECHALLEL SHABBOS'IM.

To anon 10:37 - how do you know the earlier poster was not in Australia or elsewhere in the far east? I've posted here from Israel when it's still been Shabbos in the US.

Anon12:17 - It is obvious the poster was Mechallel Shabbos. (As an aside, it was still Shabbos in Israel when he posted.) In the unlikely event he was in the "far east" (Tokyo, Melbourne, etc.) even though this blog tends to have a strong focus on local NY events, why did he say "GUT SHABBOSS" at the end of his post (Shabbos would have been over in Tokyo or Melbourne)!?

I DO NOT BELEIVE THIS STORY!!

This person is so full of SELF HATRED that they have to go so low and degrade some other ethinic society (chasidishe boys wih LANGE PEYOS) to justify their complexed issues. Chasidishe Boys dont even realize the difference between the two.

GET A LIFE!!

He is correct. He gave himself up as a rasha mirusha with his original malicious comments. He proved it by saying Gut Shabboss. Obviously it was Shabbos Kodesh when he wrote it. Any Shomer Shabbos in the world would not have been able to see that BEFORE Shabbos. Either it was Shabbos (in about 90% of the world) or it was AFTER Shabbos (in Australia.)
