Jewish diamond dealer's relatives sue

Relatives of a diamond dealer slain by the mob after two former detectives allegedly leaked sensitive information filed a $100 million notice of claim against the city and the NYPD yesterday.
The widow, Rachel Leah Greenwald, blamed NYPD failures for the "gross negligence, recklessness, carelessness and wrongful criminal conduct" of Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, who were still cops at the time of her husband's 1986 murder.
Israel Greenwald's body was dug up in a Brooklyn garage this past April 1st, 19 years after the murder.
Eppolito and Caracappa are awaiting trial in connection with eight mob murders.
They have not yet been charged in the Greenwald slaying, but a new indictment is expected, according to sources.

Time to clean house at the 66 precinct!

actually, if u know anyone in the diamond business hell tell u that he was the most honest man to do business with. Hashem Yinkom Domo.

Israel Greenwald was an innocent, honest businessman who was all but 34 with a wife and two young children. He was used unwittingly by a hasidic diamond dealer with mob connections who asked him to deposit bonds that were stolen. Greenwald did not know this guy was connected nor that the bonds were stolen. He was then caught and forced to be a witness against this Hasid which Israel did not want to do because he would be "Moser" against a fellow Jew. Tragically the scumbags cops saw his name on the potential witness list and did away with him. He left behind a family who was never able to collect life insurance, social security, etc. because the scumbags cops hid his body. It is a miracle it was found 19 years later. I hope that his wife gets as much as she can for everything her and her children went through.

I am a diament dealer, and I worked with Israel Greenwald. He was young kind and one of the most reliable and honest business man that I had worked with.He shouldn't have being killed, and I hope that those two police officers will get punished for what they had done to Israel and his wonderfull family that lost him.

A week after Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa were released on $5 million bail, the feds are poised to up the ante for the former NYPD detectives and charge them with another mob murder and a plot to kill a federal prosecutor, Gang Land has learned.

The new charges involve the 1986 slaying of gem merchant Israel Greenwald - the first of nine slayings the "Mafia Cops" allegedly took part in - and a plan to murder a then-assistant U.S. Attorney, Charles Rose, that was triggered by Luchese underboss Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso.

I have heard the those two police officers are finally indicted for the killing of Israel Greenwald, and I hope that they will get the punishment that they deserve.

In a superseding indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa were charged with kidnapping and killing Israel Greenwald, whose remains were discovered at a Brooklyn parking lot in April.

Greenwald, 34, disappeared after leaving for work in Manhattan's Diamond District in 1986. His skeletal remains were unearthed nearly two decades later after an informant directed the FBI to the parking lot.

Eppolito and Caracappa, who had retired together in Las Vegas, were arrested there in March on charges that they took tens of thousands of dollars in exchange for working as hitmen for and providing information to the Lucchese crime family.

Greenwald is the ninth person prosecutors have identified as a victim of the former partners.

The new charges announced Wednesday include kidnapping, murder and conspiracy to commit both. Eppolito and Caracappa have denied all the charges against them and are free on $5 million bail each.

Eppolito's lawyer, Bruce Cutler, said the government's case was "still stale, weak and has a statute of limitations problem."

Caracappa's attorney, Edward Hayes, said he was not surprised by the new charges, which he said his client denies.

An attorney for Greenwald's family, Benjamin Brafman, described him as "an innocent man who unwittingly became involved in a business transaction with dangerous people."

"The family is very pleased and relieved that the people allegedly responsible for the murder of Mr. Greenwald are finally going to be brought to justice," Brafman said, adding that for 19 years Greenwald's wife and two daughters had no idea what had happened to him.

Israel was a good, honest man and I hope these cops get the chair. These cops could care less about the ramifications of their murderous ways. Israel's life should not have been cut short at 34 and although it will never make things better, at least seeing the murderers get theirs will bring some sort of peace to the family. In addition if these guys did it while working as cops..the city should pay major reparations to the family. May Justice be served!!!

19 years ago a religious Jewish man by the name of Israel Greenwald disappeared from the face of the earth, leaving behind a grieving wife and 2 small daughters. For 19 years Israel’s family did not know what happened to him.A few months ago 2 dirty cops were arrested and indicted for 8 murders and one of their victims was Israel Greenwald. His remains were found after 19 years in a garage in Brooklyn. At last his family had the closure they needed and were able to give him a Jewish burial in Israel. Now the 2 dirty mob cops Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, are up for trial these days and the family is praying and hoping to see these 2 murderers rot in jail for the rest of their livesOne of the witnesses against these cops is an old Jewish Drug Dealer by the name of Kaplan and he testified against these cops and told how they murdered Israel and buried him in a garage in Brooklyn. Fleshing out his tale of gangland murder and corruption, he told jurors at the trial of Louis J. Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa that in 1986, the two New York detectives murdered a jeweler in a parking garage and then, years later, laughed about the killing at a secret meeting in a Staten Island cemetery.Kaplan admitted that he had given the murder contract to Mr. Eppolito's cousin Frank Santora Jr. and that the cousin had then recruited the detective and his partner to stop Mr. Greenwald on the highway, tell him he was wanted in a hit-and-run accident and then assassinate him in cold blood."The guy was driving his car," Mr. Kaplan said Mr. Santora had informed him once the contract had been filled. "They put on the flashing lights and pulled him over and told him he was wanted in a hit-and-run and they wanted him to be in a lineup."They took him, according to Frank, to an automobile repair place, a collision place, that was a friend of theirs."It was there, prosecutors say, that the three men bound Mr. Greenwald's hands, shoved a plastic bag on his head, secured it with his own scarf, then shot him twice in the head. The family asks whoever knew or heard about Israel Greenwald please pray for him that justice will be served and that those evil men will be put in jail for the rest of their lives.

WIDOW'S WOUNDS REOPEN
By MURRAY WEISS Criminal Justice Editor

March 27, 2006 -- 'MOB COPS' LINKED TO HUBBY'S SLAY
Leah Greenwald says she struggled to survive with her two young daughters after her young husband, Israel, vanished.

Now, 20 years later, the Greenwalds are battling another disturbing reality: that two reputed "Mafia cops" may have been involved in his abduction and murder.

"We were happy to finally have some closure when his body was found, but we were shocked at who they said might be responsible," Leah said in her first interview since her diamond-dealer husband's remains were unearthed in a Flatbush, Brooklyn, parking garage in April.

"We simply hope that justice will be served and our questions answered," she said. "My husband was a good man, a good father, and he did not deserve to be killed and buried and never experience his daughters' lives."

Israel Greenwald, 33, left his home Feb. 10, 1986 - his 11th wedding anniversary - and, according to the testimony of mob rat Burton Kaplan, was pulled over by a police car allegedly driven by then-Detectives Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa. They brought the slender jeweler to the parking garage, where he was shot by Eppolito's cousin Frank Santora and buried beneath concrete, authorities say.

According to court testimony, Greenwald was used as a middle man by another jeweler to take a stolen negotiable bond to Europe, where it was cashed.

Sources say he "may have been duped" and is "basically innocent."

When the mob learned the feds were investigating, they decided Greenwald was a weak link who had to go. His family remembered their last moments together as if it were yesterday, providing a snapshot into a joyous Queens household filled with whimsy and love.

"We had a monkey," one daughter, Michelle, now a graphics designer and mother of three, recalled, explaining how her father brought the primate home because she once said she'd like one as a pet.

Her last memory of her father was him chasing the monkey with a local magician who wanted to borrow the pet for a children's show.

"I just remember saying, 'Goodbye, Dad,' and heading off to catch the school bus and leaving him and the magician chasing the monkey," she said.

For years, Leah worked numerous jobs day and night, doing everything from selling health products to soliciting advertisements to scrape together enough to save her home - without life insurance or other death benefits.

Finally, she was forced to give up nearly everything, moving with her daughters from one apartment to another - including one just a block from where her husband was buried.

But she points to her daughters and says, "It was worth it."

"Our life was completely unsettled. I used to say my life was hell on earth and unusual," she said.

Right down to who may have killed her husband.

I am a family member of Israel Greenwald. I can say with all honesty that I don't think that I will ever get over the horror, pain and torturous sadness that his murder caused in my life. For others, he was just another person, but for us, he was integral and needed. Just reading the news updates brings back so much pain. May Hashem who is the king of all justice and healing revenge the murderers and heal and compensate his brokenhearted family.

Baruch Hashem that some justice came after 2 decades for the Greenwald family. The two Mafia Cops finally got what they deserved, life sentences. May Israel Greenwald's soul have some peace for what was done to him and to his family. May his true good name be revealed. He was an innocent man and an honest businessman, whose kind nature and willingness to be of assistance to his friends brought him to the dangerous situation he fell into. he was betrayed by his friend and his cooperation with the FEDS ultimately led to his untimely end. His family should only know of joy for the rest of their lives.
